Marja originally comes from the Netherlands. She has worked in the Bay of Plenty since 2003 as a GP and as an Accident & Medical doctor and is fully dedicated to her profession. Through her career she has built up a broad set of skills.

Her special interests are accident & medical care, children’s health, female (sexual) health and contraception. She is married and has 2 children. If she is not at work, you might find her in the gym.

Work history

She completed her medical studies in 1991 (NL). She later acquired a post-graduate Diploma in Tropical Health, surgery, gynaecology / obstetrics and tropical medicine (NL). She worked in Africa (Malawi and Tanzania) for five years together with her husband, Dr Martijn Haitsma.
In the UK she obtained her post-graduate degree in general practice (UK;2002) and has worked in general practice ever since.

Martijn  comes from the Netherlands. He has worked in the Bay of Plenty since 2003 as a GP and has a special interest in skin cancer medicine. Through his career he has built up a broad set of skills.

His interests are children’s health, care of the elderly and healthy living; the pragmatic approach, with emphasis on the do’s and not the don’ts. He has a special interest in skin cancer and performs skin checks for which there are dedicated clinics.

He is married and has 2 children. If he is not at work, you might find him playing tennis or squash.

Dennis is a General Practitioner from Germany, who decided to emigrate to New Zealand and start a new life in this wonderful country. Dennis loves working as a medical doctor and serving his patients.

He is married and has 3 children. When he is not at work, he tries to spend as much time as possible with his family. Apart from his family, he also loves nature.

Work history

Dennis found his passion for medicine during his civilian service for the paramedics of the Red Cross in Germany (2003-2004), so he decided to study medicine. He graduated in 2010 in Tuebingen, Germany. After that, he worked at various hospitals and medical centres. In Germany, he obtained his post-graduate degree in general practice (Germany, 2021), as well as a post-graduate degree in palliative care (Germany, 2021). In Germany, he also holds a post-graduate degree in human genetics and a Master’s degree in health business administration (MHBA).

Paul is a Physician Associate from the United States who has joined us from Arizona. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Papamoa and is excited to contribute to excellent health outcomes in our community, and to continue exploring New Zealand.

Paul has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Brandeis University, and lived and worked in the US Antarctic Program at a small US research base on the Antarctic Peninsula, where he led the Glacier Search and Rescue team and worked closely with the Station Physician on the Trauma and Medical Response team. He received his Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician and US Coast Guard Medical Person in Charge certifications and worked as the EMT aboard the Research Vessel Ice Breaker Laurence M Gould on population transport and research science trips to, from, and along the Antarctic Peninsula. He worked in pre-hospital emergency medicine as an EMT on the ambulance while completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical studies from 2012. He began Northern Arizona University’s PA program in 2014 completing his medical didactics and clinical rotations in Emergency Medicine, outpatient and inpatient/hospital Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, General and Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Dermatology. He then passed his US National Certification Exam to become a Certified Physician Associate.

Work History:

Paul has over seven years experience treating patients in Hospital Emergency Departments across Arizona including two rural Level III and an urban Level V Trauma Center seeing emergent and urgent visits with a broad range of traumatic injuries and acute medical problems. He earned a Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medicine from the NCCPA in 2018. He spent four years working with indigenous populations including Navajo and Hopi Native Americans in northeastern Arizona and enjoys broadening his cultural awareness and providing culturally-sensitive care to all patients. He has also worked part time as a Surgical First Assistant and Robotic Assistant in the Operating Room. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, and past chair of the Expedition Medicine committee of the Wilderness Medicine Society. He enjoys time with family and friends, world travel, glacier and high-altitude mountaineering, hiking, sailing, and a good cup of coffee.
